Kevin Eggan, Harvard University
Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Cambridge, MA
"Stem cell and reprogramming approaches to the study of neurodegeneration"

Kevin Eggan is Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Scientist and Associate Professor at the
Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology of the Harvard University. His laboratory is pursuing two interlocking areas of investigation: the basic biology of stem cell programming and reprogramming, and the application of the resulting technologies to studies of the neuromuscular system and the diseases that affect it. The in vitro models of neuromuscular diseases are established for both mechanistic studies and for the discovery of novel small molecule therapeutics.

November 21, 2011 Seminar by Matthias Lutolf
from EPFL Lausanne
"Probing and manipulating single hematopoietic stem cell fate in artificial niches"

Research in the Lutolf ’s Laboratory is at the interface of stem cell biology and bioengineering to gain fundamental insight into how protein components of tissue-specific microenvironments (niches) control the behavior of stem cells.

His group has recently published:
Artificial niche microarrays for probing single stem cell fate in high throughput.
Gobaa S, Hoehnel S, Roccio M, Negro A, Kobel S, Lutolf MP. Nat Methods. 2011 Oct 9;8(11):949-55.

Seminar by Prof. Ivan Stamenkovic
Institute of Pathology, University of Lausanne on "Mechanisms of emergence of cancer stem cells in sarcomas"

The research of Ivan Stamenkovic concentrates on cancer development and progression. His recent papers in J Clin Invest and Genes Dev describe the regulation of cancer stem cells, including the involvement of microRNA and the influence of the microenvironmental cells in sarcomas.

November 2010 The group of Rolf Zeller at Department of Biomedicine of the University of Basel established a new approach to genetically modify murine ES cells (Nature Methods, November issue 2010).
The method allows a precise and highly efficient exchange of genetic sequences taking advantage of the existing conventional recombinase sites inserted into the thousands of already available conditional mouse alleles.

September 2010 Embryonic stem cells help uncovering a novel role for neurotrophin receptors. Using engineered embryonic stem cells, the group of Yves Barde at the Biozentrum discovered an unexpected role for growth factor receptors. The new findings explain previous observations that nerve cells in the developing brain are much less dependent on a supply of growth factor for their survival, compared with those of the peripheral nervous system.  The latter served as a paradigm for the action of growth factor on neurons for over 50 years.    Weblink
